Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by the mother, her grandmother and her godparents. Her father left her family. In her early years, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to associations with words. Ford was intrigued by the acting profession during her teen years, and was a part of the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time however, Ford realised that this was not the best place for her. Ford later applied for a place in the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. One of her classmates were Shaun Dingwall, who would later have a recurring role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993 but at the time, she had already made her TV debut on a 1991 episode of Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". Tate began her TV debut in 1991and appeared in shows such as The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. She also worked regularly in theatres, before eventually becoming a member of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate started to get noticed for her stand up comedy in the year 1996.
